MAP DESIGN
The maps I create blend clear, accessible navigation with hand‑crafted illustration and thoughtful design. Whether you’re looking to highlight estate trails, promote local tourism, support community engagement, or simply help visitors discover the quieter corners of your land, I develop maps that are tailored to your needs and the character of your environment.

Walk Alyth Map
In creating this walking map of Alyth, I tapped into the collective knowledge of the community. Working closely with the local Alyth Path Network volunteers and using local insights, I crafted each path description, highlighting features to ease navigation. But it's with the intricate illustration where the trails really come alive. With nature’s palette of forests, fields, ponds and hills, these details help the user navigate the walks but also provide a refreshing aesthetic.

On the reverse side you’ll find not just words but a visual journey. Full walking descriptions, lovingly illustrated, await the local and visiting walkers. It was a wonderful surprise to learn my maps helped many locals to discover new places.

The Ballathie Compass

The Ballathie House Hotel, on the banks of the River Tay, were looking for a small map and guide for their guests. It outlines the estate walks, accommodation and visitor highlights. The main draw here are the Fishing Bothies and the two walk trails along the River Tay and in the private Ballathie Forest. The focused scale allowed for more illustrative options and landscape details.

Walk Alyth: Connecting Communities Map

Following the warm reception of the initial Walk Alyth Map, we embarked on a sequel, a cartographic encore. This time, our paths stretched beyond Alyth’s borders, weaving connections with neighboring communities. The final design is a harmonious blend of practicality and artistry.

Blairgowrie & Rattray Path Network

The largest town in Perth & Kinross has a rich history of local walks and trails. This map became two sided, to accommodate the short routes around town and the surrounding longer paths, combining a rich illustrative style with a dense network of walking trails, cycle paths and many local shortcuts. An added feature this time around are some heritage and historical information points. I worked closely with the Blairgowrie Development Trust to deliver this popular map of the area.

Alyth Development Trust: Connecting Community Action Plan

A vibrant design woven with attention-grabbing hues, whimsical illustrations, and a dash of fun. The mission was to connect with the local community, sparking excitement about the future and revealing the town’s 5-year plan on the development on projects like the new allotments, green spaces and public services.

From this initial design sprouted a second map. This one lead curious souls to their community orchard. Childlike, friendly illustrations, pointing the way. Because accessibility isn’t just about roads and ramps, it’s about inviting everyone, big and small, to explore, dream, and discover.

Strathmore Open Studios 2024
This job required a purely informative and minimalist map, showing the locations of the exhibiting artist studios. Artist location is shown with the numbers denoting which artists are at any one venue. Colour is used to differentiate the various art disciplines. This was used in conjunction with the full artist bios, contact details and addresses inside the final brochure. Viewable on printed media and online. Attention to detail is always key, for example, brochure folds would be clear of valuable information to keep things accessible and the map itself is printed on the centre pages to help users find the map quickly.

Alyth.online Website
This map, designed for an online experience, shows visitors the basic layout of the town and highlights the feature buildings and attractions they might wish to locate. Using colour (warm hues show relevant information) to highlight where the points of interest are in the town.
